Notice Board

Unofficial Classes
August 1, 06

The Obedience Council conducted a teleconference meeting in late July.

The majority of time was devoted to dotting “i’s” and crossing “t’s” on the proposed Rally O rules. The most recent draft will be provided at the Rally workshops. Once they are approved by the board, the final version will be available on the CKC website.

In addition to Rally items, there was a change to the proposed UNOFFICIAL CLASSES requirements.

During the Spring we put forward a bid to open up Unofficial Classes by no longer requiring an exhibitor to enter either an official class or Ex Only when entering an unofficial class. The board returned the motion to the obedience council citing that should the motion be approved, it would put obedience rules in conflict with other rulebooks. Council withdrew the motion.

A conflict between sections 15.1.1 and 15.7.1 was identified by council members during their most recent teleconference call

Section 15.1.1 states that the dog “must” be entered in any regular class or exhibition only while 15.7.1 provides the option by using the word “may”. There will be motion put to the board changing “may” in 15.7.1 to “must”.

COOLING or WARMING COATS or SWEATERS
IN THE OBEDIENCE RING

Results of an informal poll of zone 10 obedience fanciers

Subject: Warming sweaters/coats for dogs in obed ring

A while back I received an interesting call from a gal in B.C. who owns a Crested and intends to compete in obed. She wanted to send a motion to the obedience council with respect to allowing dogs to compete in the obed ring while wearing sweaters/coats.

An item similar to this was considered by the council a couple of years ago and was defeated.

I told the caller that I would conduct an informal poll in my zone in order to have a thorough understanding on what the views of the majority might be so that when it is next considered by council, I would be clear on the wishes of the majority in this area.

I pointed out to her that the motion should include all sizes of dogs and all weather conditions, if we are going to open this up ~ i.e. cooler blankets would be permitted during hot summer months and that any sized dog would be permitted to wear a sweater or coat should the handler deem one necessary.

Blankets and pads would not be considered.

I received 42 responses – 20 were in favour of allowing warming/cooling sweaters/coats on the dogs and 22 were against. That’s a pretty even split. I will be very interesting to see what the opinions of others in other zones might be.

If anyone visiting this site wants to comment, kindly contact your obedience rep ~ not me. I’m serving zone 10 and would like to see folks contact their own rep to express views/opinions.

RG04 - Application to Attain Listed Breed Status for Border Collies
September 25, 2006

A group of individuals are planning to make application under RG004 to attain Listed Breed status for Border Collies

If you would like to be included, or want more information, kindly contact Paula Elson at groomingdales@sympatico.ca

September 30, 2006

Here is an excerpt from a message I received from Paula Elson –obedience rep – zone 4 – Ontario North ~ Paula is spearheading the application.

”We have had a lot of emails in support of the application.

I handed in the complete package this morning at the CKC. It should be on the December Board Agenda for approval and to the membership for voting by Feb/Mar.

If we can get as many people to vote in favour then we're back, if the Board has no problems with Border Collies.

We don't require a percentage of people to vote they just have to be on the favourable side.

Also, the Kelpies will be in the November issue of the Official section...

Paula Elson”

Whenever there is a vote required, it is important that we as CKC members participate ... Please remember if one doesn’t participate, one doesn’t have grounds to complain or for that matter, even comment – in my opinion, anyway!
