CKC Rally O Program Announced!

Hi All,

The board of Directors of CKC approved the CKC Rally programme!

Launch is January 1, 2007

The board made the following changes to the proposed rally rules:

1.

The board made the following changes to the proposed rally rules –

1. There was a requirement in the proposed rules to the effect that clubs hosting rally trials would be required to host the same number of obedience trials in any given year as rally trials.

Sections pertaining to this requirement were deleted by the Board, the result being that only CKC clubs accredited to host obedience trials will be permitted to host Rally trials, but the club will not be required to host the same number of obedience trials as rally trials in any given year.

On examination of this requirement, it’s possible (for example) for a club to host obedience trials in 2007, only rally in 2008 and 2009. The club would be required to host obedience again in 2010 in order to retain its ability to host obedience – which is the link to being able to host rally trials.

For anyone who isn’t aware, there is a rule that clubs must host an obedience event every 3 years in order to retain an accredited status. If a club fails to host an obedience trial, and the 3 year time allowance expires, the club is then required to re-apply before being permitted to once again host an obedience event.

Bottom line – no obedience accreditation, no ability to host rally.

2.

There will be a separate rulebook for Rally rather than rally rules being contained in the Obedience rulebook.

3.

Rally judges eligibility requirements have been drafted by the obedience council. It will be sent to the board for approval. The document is extensive and detailed.

Quick Summary -- CKC Obedience judges will be permitted to judge rally (after successfully completing a written exam), as well as AKC Rally judges, CARO and APDT judges.

Regards

Gin Cummings

Rally rules and all workshop handouts will be available on my website following the October 15th Rally workshop in Calgary.

Rally Judges Eligibility Requirements

The following is a summary of recommendations made by the obedience council regarding Rally Judges. As with any other items pertaining to rules, it must go to the board for approval before it can be considered official. As a result, I hope anyone reading this will bear in mind that these recommendations are just that ~ they are recommendations ~ and the board is at liberty to change, delete or add items as they see fit.

Complete judging eligibility requirements will be available through CKC head office following board approval.

1. Applicant Rally Trial Judges

CKC licensed obedience judges may apply to judge all classes of Rally trials. They will be required to successfully complete an open book, multiple choice exam before being approved to judge rally. It is recommended that they have also attended at least one rally seminar which includes course design and judging standards.

Application may be made on or after January 1, 2007

2. Non-resident Rally Judges

Only non-resident judges who are accredited to judge all obedience classes and all rally classes in their country (AKC judges are the only ones I’m aware of who fulfill this requirement) will be recognized to judge CKC rally events.

3. Those applying during 2007, 2008 and 2009 to judge Rally events must:

• Be a resident of Canda
• Be 21 years of age or over
• Be a CKC member in good standing for at least 3 consecutive years immediately preceding application
• Have personally trained and completed a CDX or higher obedience title on at least one dog
• Have been working with the public in dog training, preferably in obedience and rally classes during the 3 years
   immediately preceding application to judge

OR

• In lieu of

being a CKC member for 3 consecutive years (an applicant would still be required to be a CKC member in good standing – just not for the earlier stated 3 years)

and in lieu of being required to have trained a dog to at least CDX,

an individual who is currently an approved judge for all levels of rally in Canada with the Canadian Association of Rally Obedience (CARO) or Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) may apply to judge CKC rally. This is subject to approval by Head Office (which means head office personnel would verify judging status with CARO or APDT).

In addition to the criteria set out above, the following must be adhered to:

• Once a completed application with all pertinent documentation has been submitted to Head Office
and the appropriate administrative fees have been paid, the applicant must successfully pass an
   open book, multiple choice examination.
• Examination details
• Applicant must attain a passing mark of 85% or higher
• Completed exams are marked by Head Office
• Applicants requiring re-writes must wait 6 months before rewriting but can’t rewrite if longer than
   a year has passed.
• Newly licensed judges will be observed at their first assignment

4. Beginning in 2010, applicants will need to meet the following requirements in addition to those set out above (07, 08 or 09)

• An applicant must have completed all 3 levels of CKC rally titles on at least one dog
• An applicant must have within 3 years immediately preceding the application have judged all rally classes at a
minimum of 2 rally sanction matches with a total of 15 Rally Novice, 10 Rally Advanced and 6 Rally Excellent
   dogs.
• An applicant must have served as a ring steward at a minimum of 3 CKC rally trails
• An applicant will then be required to apprentice judge at a minimum of 2 difference licensed rally trials with
2 different judges with a minimum of 15 Novice, 10 Advanced and 6 Excellent dogs.

Our first Rally O experience

A bit about our first Rally O experience...

Two weeks after attaining her Obedience Trial Championship, ReeRee and I attended our first Rally Obedience (Rally O)  trials.  They were sponsored by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).

Ree and I stepped into the Rally ring for the first time and, by golly, when the scores came out, she’d tied for first place! It was a really large class and I was thrilled with her effort.

We participated in 5 trials that weekend and qualified in all 5.    Ree earned a first place, tied for first but came in 2nd after the run-off in a different trial and gave me a couple of fourth place wins.  What a ball we had!

If you haven’t tried Rally, give it a look – it’s a lot of fun.  Remember Rally O comes to CKC on January 1st, 2007.

Proposed Rules and all workshop handouts will be available on this website as quickly as we can get them up following the last workshop in Calgary on October 15th 2006.

If you think you’d like to attend the workshop, please Email Me.

Level 1 Title with Judge Mary Martineau

~ 3 straight qualifiers under 3 judges with two legs to spare.

One must achieve 3 qualifying legs under at least 2 different judges in order to attain the title.  Serena received the APDT Award of Excellence for her rounds at these trials.

A FEW OF THE RALLY EXERCISES EXPLAINED,,,

The dog is marked on precision and correct response to commands. The handler is marked on such things as repeating of commands, incorrectly performing the station, staying on course, incorrect footwork, etc.  These particular errors are the same for CKC, CARO and APDT Rally trials.

Straight 8

The Straight 8 is comprised of 4 pylons positioned in a straight line.  The handler and dog must weave between the pylons to the end and then return.  The dog must maintain correct heel position throughout the pattern.

<< 270° Right

Dog and Handler must show a noticeable change of pace >>

<< Normal

A “Normal” sign always follows a change of pace sign

Ree knew her round had been strong and she gave a big jump for joy to celebrate

Right Side Step

The dog and the handler move to the right in unison.  The dog is required to perform a side pass when the handler steps to the right.    The exercise is performed in two ways – while heeling and from a sit – depending on the level and station description.

In the following photos, I’m teaching our youngster, KoKo, to perform the right side pass which she will need in Rally.  She will need to know how to perform the left side pass in the obedience ring and for Freestyle.  As a result, I’m working with her on both side pass directions.

First, I “magnetize” her head so that I have her unwavering attention – I’m using food and the clicker.  After this photo was taken, I got KoKo on her feet by moving slightly to my right.

A dog can be “steered” by controlling the head.  If I were to swing my hand further away from me, KoKo would swing her bum into & behind me in order to follow the food.    Conversely, if I were to swing my hand in front & across my waist area, she would swing her bum out in order to follow the food.

By keeping my hand where it should be, KoKo is able to keep her spine straight.

Can you see that she is lifting both front and hind right feet as I take a step to my right while keeping her body in a straight line?  That’s what she will be required to do when we perform the right side step.

She’s got it.  Both front and hind feet are crossing.  We will continue to work on this ~ both left and right ~ so she will move either direction and maintain heel position.  My command to her is “Get In” when I move to the right and “Move” when we go to the left ~ but one could use any command(s) they choose.
